Hugo Wolf

Introduction

Austrian composer, born on the 13th of March 1860 at Windischgraz in Styria. His male parent, who was in the animal skin wares trade, was an intense musician. From him Hugo educated the rudiments of the piano and the violin. After an miserable school life, in which he presented little aptitude for any kind but tunes, he went in 1875 to the Conservatoire. He becomes noticeable to have educated very little there, and was discredited in 1877 because of a useful prank in the configuration of a menacing message to the chief director, for which he was maybe unjustly held responsible. From the age of seventeen he had to be reliant upon himself for his tuneful training.(Larue 814)

Middle Life

In 1884 he became tuneful opponent to the Salonblatt, a Viennese population paper, and contrived by his uncompromisingly trenchant and sarcastic approach to win a notoriety which was not encouraging to his future prospects. By the end of 1891 he had written the bulk of his works, on which his renown chiefly rests, 43 Mörike Lieder, 20 Eichendorff Lieder, 51 Goethe Lieder, 44 Lieder from Geibel and Heyse's Spanisches Liederspiel, and 22 from Heyse's Italienisches Liederbuch, a second part containing of 24 recitals being adjoined in 1896. Besides these were 13 surroundings of lyrics by divergent authors, peripheral tunes to Henrik Ibsen's Fest auf Solhaug, a small number choral and instrumental works, an opera in four plays, Der Corregidor, productively generated at Mannheim in June 1896, and lastly surroundings of three sonnets by Michelangelo in March 1897.
