Human Resource Management

Human Resource Management (HRM) is one of the most significant functions for an organization that concentrates on recruitment, management, and provision of direction for people working in the organization. Human Resource Management may also be performed by line managers.

Definitions

Human Resource Management is defined as the management function that relates to the people within an organization including planning, recruitment, hiring, selection, compensation, performance management, organizational growth and development, learning and training, benefits, employee motivation, administration and communication (Beche, 2008, pp.32).

Functions of Human Resource Management

Human resource management is responsible for looking after the human resource aspects of an organization. It is responsible for acquiring qualified individuals, providing them with training, motivating them for high levels of performance, and installing mechanisms that ensure that the employees sustain their productive association with the organization.

Following are the 7 main functions of Human Resource Management.

1. Human Resource planning

2. Recruitment and selection

3. Training and development

4. Performance appraisal

6. Compensation and benefits

7. Employee relations

All these functions are significant to the organization. However, the first function of human resource planning forms the foundation for all the others.

Human Resource Planning

The human resource of an organization serves as its lifeline. Organizations are in need of people just as they need other resources including material inputs, machineries and equipments, financial and other resources. Human Resource Planning enables organizations to meet their future demands for quality human resource in the same manner that they adopt for their nonhuman needs. Fundamentally, all organizations and businesses carry out Human Resource Planning. This can either be a formal undertaking or an informal procedure. Some organizations do a convincing job while others an unsatisfactory job (Pilbeam & Corbridge, 2010, pp. 45).

Definitions

Also, referred to as work force planning or personnel planning, the HR planning can be defined as follows.

Human Resource Planning Process

The Human Resource Planning Process comprises 4 key stages:

Identifying the impact of the strategic objectives of the organization on particular units of the business.

Analyzing and assessing the organizational demand for human resources including the sets of skills, knowledge, experience and the total number of employees for achieving the strategic objectives both at the organizational and departmental level.

Evaluating the net requirements of the human resources for the organization taking into account the current supply of human resources in the labour markets.
