Image of the Nurse

In this term paper I will explore the widespread images of nursing and talk about how these images can influence and reflect the rank of nursing inside society. I undertook a sequence of meetings with five persons under the age of twenty-five to work out some of the images of nursing, their contradictory and affirmative attributes and the causes they exist. Further concern of some of the broader significances of my study in conjunction with released readings on the subject, seem to indicate that gender norms; especially in relative to the doctor as a female entity, have had an important impact on widespread images. Perpetuated by the media, these images both contemplate and reinforce the communal status of nursing through out history.

Nursing is and habitually has been a nurturing profession, although the function of the doctor altered dramatically over the centuries. The community saw the doctor as a beneficial and defending individual, who was eager to care for the ill, hurt and elderly. A nurse was furthermore simplified as a woman who suckled and took care of children. (Ellis and Hartlay, 2000: 165; Taylor and area, 1997: 235) For the reason, that only a feminine can suckle children, it is clear, why the public associated nursing with women.

Through the decades, the role of the nurse moved from just motherhood, nourishing and fostering children, towards a role of a person with rising responsibilities, expanding tasks and no specific gender. Today, nursing is related with caring for an individual in a variety of health related situations. (Ellis and 2000: 165) although, nurturing and curing is not the only significant task for the nurse. He or she furthermore takes part in health advancement, for example teaching purchasers about health and the avoidance of infirmity.

In today's humanity, nursing takes place in numerous different contexts including patients' dwellings, groups, clinics, schools or rehabilitation facilities and is engaged in a variety of distinct wellbeing care activities. The work of a nurse can reach from prime health care to tertiary care and embraces a centered function in double-checking the largest standards of health care in distinct environments. Doctors today have an immense blame in association with working in a diversity of different wellbeing care settings. It is therefore significant for the profession to have autonomy, administration and recognition.

Another essential fact is that nurses need critical thinking skills to perform all the different tasks expected from patients, physicians and other health professions. (Crisp, 2001)

Despite the multi tasks that a modern nurse can be involved in; there is still a clear disparity between nurse and physician. The nurse's main task remains to be caring for the patient and the physician's task is to diagnose and treat the ill and injured. This clearly states that physicians have the autonomy over decision making on the patient, how to treat the patient and to decide on further medical procedures. However, due to the great changes and impacts on the health care ...
