Introduction

Clients often arrive to counselors to change their lives in some way, such as to become more assertive. As likely, clients seek counseling as a result of some change, perhaps a death or different working conditions. Clients often find themselves in the midst of some change they do not understand or over which they have little control. In its most general form, therapy presents a context for such change. How to explain any change, how to assess its direction or to predict effects, and how to understand the meanings any change may have for the client are questions the effective counselor must ask. The counselor relies on the notions of human development to consider the client's grade of functioning and values distinct developmental ideas as lenses through which to view the client. The expert counselor appreciates that persons are different but users knowledge of developmental theory to understand these dissimilarities inside the context of a universal human process. Because so much of their work involves making conclusions related to human development, counselors need to realise the assumptions upon which such conclusions are made. Counselors need to realise all developmental ideas and how these ideas are directed to counseling to be effective.
