Innovative Product Design

Theoretical issues

One of the problems traditionally encountered in the design of innovative products, as outlined in both the professional and academic literature, difficulty of communication and collaboration between the "marketing" and the "engineering design and design."

These difficulties arise mainly from the "clash" between two cultures and two different visions.

"Innovation is a necessary consequence of a collaborative process between the different functions of a business"

For Research and Development, the major uncertainty inherent in any innovation process is linked to the development of the components of the new offer, and controls their performance "objective". For marketing, it is related to the acceptance of new offers for consumers and the adjustment of the offer to the needs and expectations of current and future prospects. The design approach, focusing on the use, features the added value of innovation for the customer; with the risk perception is not the desired one (Annacchino, 2003, 12-47).

These different visions and approaches are complementary and also contribute to the success of innovation. Marketing is the "voice of the consumer", while the R & D and design should reflect the voice product, minimizing the gap between the specification and marketing the finished product. It is therefore necessary that each of these functions take ownership of the vision, language and culture of others to develop the best and the shortest possible time an offer that best meet the opportunities related to the simultaneous consideration and balance of the technological and competitive environment of the company (Trott, 2008, 9-18).

Relevant empirical applications

The Relevant empirical applications involved in the technique and technology is different. In the case of the fundamental core technology is the previous accumulated experience, achieved through the trial and the successes and failures, an experience that cannot be communicated orally or in writing but through the activity itself: "The technical knowledge as empirical knowledge is more experimental than practical instruments. It is not empirical or empirical practice or experience only simple, but essentially the observation, experimentation, measurement, conceptualization and reasoning, as conditions for the transformation of practice (Box, 1983, 24-36). The reduction of the empirical to the practical, experience simple, instrumental, reflects inadequate use of the concept of empiricism or undervaluing of practical knowledge, derived from the unequal social division between practical work and the intellectual nature" (Day, 1981, 5-37).

Innovative Product Design, in turn, has attributes that underpin reflective activity, which provides an argumentative base that allows her explanation. Innovative Product Design demands an indissoluble relationship between theory and practice, the permanent collection of information that allows new forms, new techniques, and new results. It is mostly interdisciplinary, which allows you to redefine their domains and even create new ...
