Introduction

The aim of this study is to identify conflicts which affect the formation of expectations of the immigrant families regarding their relationship with their children. It tries to play down the impact of family strategy of immigrants which in turn is related to the process of social and cultural traditions on the formation of such expectations by controlling the influence of other demographic conditions. It concludes that the impacts of social and cultural reproduction of the same conformation have been differential by gender. Among men the impact of socialization and maternal education is more important, while among women the economic conditions that are transmitted between the two generations is more relevant.

From the point of view of most immigrants who arrived in Canada during the decades between the 1990s and 21st century, intergenerational relations as part of the family system has been crucial since the family has been the only institution with which the generation have to ensure their survival and support in old age, especially under very limited conditions for access to social insurance (Shearman and Dumlao, 2008). Thus, knowing the way down the intergenerational support in a group of immigrants as the case of the Canada, adds to the discussion on the policy for the elderly population where the safety of the population still relies heavily on family.
