Hospitality industry is a multibillion euro industry in the world and in United Kingdom. It includes a broad category of fields in the service industry. Restaurants, lodging, event planning, theme parks, cruise line, transportation, and all the other fields in the tourism industry. It includes all the motels, hotels, inns and all the businesses which provide short term or transitional lodging, without or with food (www.businessdictionary.com). The hospitality industry depends on the disposable income and the availability of leisure time. The business of the hospitality industry depends on the business sentiment and the consumer confidence. The industry is facing a lot of pressure to deliver quality, value and innovation. The economic conditions of customers is tightening because of the fragility of the UK and European economies. The industry is known for its unrelenting work, high turnover and fast pace (www.prospects.ac.uk). The importance of the brand, as well as, effective channels of distribution, is increasing every moment. The industry is engaging with digitally active customers these days and hence, the demands of the customers, as well as, their expectations have increased. The company that I have chosen for the report is Marriott Hotels and Resorts. The report will encompass the human resource practices of the multi-national hospitality companies with a special reference to the human resource practices of Marriott International.

Marriott International is based in Washington D.C. Marriott International is a flagship brand which consists of full service restaurants and hotels. It was founded in the year 1927 by J. Willard Marriott. The hotel started as a beer stand. Good services, good food and a fair price became the guiding principles for the stand. These principles were subsequently incorporated in the practices of Marriott International as it grew. The group is now repeatedly included in the best companies to work for a list of the Forbes. It was also ranked the 4th best company to work for in the United Kingdom in 2009 by The Times (www.marriott.co.uk). The target market of Marriott Hotels and Restaurants are the people who are looking for a fine restaurant, athletic facilities, meeting rooms or other amenities. The customers are mostly business travelers (www.marriott.com). Marriott is a multinational company and has grown to be one of the leading lodging companies of the world. The group currently has over 3700 properties and is operating in more than 74 countries of the world. Despite its growth and globalization, the sore values of the company are still intact. The company works on the values of pursuing excellence, putting people first, acting with integrity embracing change, and serving the world.
