The Use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) By Terrorists

Introduction

Many terrorist groups are getting tremendous benefits from technological advances. For example, the Internet has increased communication skills and propaganda of terrorist groups, since the only way to get publicity and attention was of traditional media. Now thanks to the network, terrorist groups can directly control the content and dissemination of materials. It is, therefore, evident that the Internet has become vital for terrorist organizations (Carsten 2010, pp. 9).

Today, almost nobody questions the role played by the network when to communicate and disseminate information. No one can escape its charms, given that the Internet has become a social, cultural, and eco-economic and technology used to bring people and institutions, an easy, fast, almost instantly and cheaply. The network also allows evaluation of all the physical constraints and generates even greater volume of interaction with a global community, which requires neither a geographic location concrete or physical knowledge between them. Not to mention, the large-volume information it provides, so much so that a study by the University of California at Berkeley concluded that the total content of all news sites available in 2000 included more than 500 terabytes of data; implying more than 550 million documents, also noted that a growing surface rate of 7.3 million pages per day (Mark 2005, pp. 99). It is, therefore, logical that such appeal has not gone unnoticed by terrorist groups, found in the network, not just a source of financing, recruitment, information, training, indoctrination, disclosure and action, but also the basis on which to base their organization. Hence, the vital importance has cyberspace to become terrorists. Although we only let refer in this article informative capacity offered by the network to terrorist groups.

Terrorist Groups Network

There is certainly not a single mediologist who deny the link between the form of terrorism, and transmission systems, and communication dominant in every age, media world as we say in our jargon. Thus, the nihilist or anarchist terrorism said the late nineteenth and early twentieth century tied to the printed graphosphere: leaflets, newspapers publishing the activists plan infernal machines, mainstream press frightening the public. Similarly, the videosphere dominated by CRT product hijacking or hostage-taking telecasts. There are many “ages mediological the attack.” (Weiman 2006, pp. 6)

The Internet has become the largest platform available expression worldwide. Today, you can find all kinds of material on the Internet, and it is almost impossible, for the various servers and governments control everything the contents poured over cyberspace. Hence, the new technologies, specifically Internet, offer alternative ways armed groups (or rather complementary) to spread freely, with virtually no censorship, messages. Therefore, it is not surprising that terrorists inclined to her, and cyberspace transformed by the benefits in the ideal of their operations. To the extent that, in 1998 identified at least some 30 terrorist organizations that had a Spanish price on the Internet and just two years later could be found hundreds of ...
