Internet backbone

Introduction

The Internet's backbone is described in its name, a short from of the compound word "inter-networking". This architecture is founded in the very specification of the benchmark TCP/IP protocol, conceived to connect any two networks which may be very distinct in internal hardware, programs, and technical design. (Janelle P.12)

Once two systems are interconnected, connection with TCP/IP is enabled end-to-end, so that any node on the Internet has the near magical ability to broadcast with any other no matter where they are. This openness of conceive has endowed the Internet architecture to augment to a global scale. (Graham P.13)
