1. Discuss how the basic interpersonal communication model that is presented in Figure 8.1 can be applied to the impersonal nature of an online forum?
The interpersonal communication is the transmitting of a certain message between two communicators. The whole process involves a sender, a message, a receiver, its feedback and noise. The sender sends his message to the receiver through a certain medium; the receiver interprets the message and then gives a feedback. However if noise is created anywhere between the process then the message won't be properly communicated. This interpersonal communication can be direct and can also be indirect. Noise is usually created in indirect communication. In the direct communication, the communication is face-to-face and there is no need of a medium. But in indirect communication, a medium is necessary through which the message is transmitted (Kesmodel, 2007).
The basic interpersonal model which is presented in figure 8.1 can be applied to the impersonal online forum communication by following the same process of interpersonal communication. An online forum is the indirect form of communication but the whole communication process is the same as that of the direct communication. A communicator sends his message through the medium to one or multiple receivers. There is a lot of noise in the online forum in the form of advertising and comments from multiple people. The sender needs to keep his desired receiver(s) in mind and send his message accordingly. He needs to grab the attention of the receiver(s).
The main process of the interpersonal communication and the online forum communication is very much the same. The only difference is that the sender uses a medium through which he sends or transmits his message. He also has to keep in mind the noise factor, so he has to create his message with good linguistic skills. There should be a proper flow in his writing so the receivers' attention is not diverted by grammatical mistakes and errors in punctuations or writing (Kesmodel, 2007).
As shown in figure 8.1, the communicator who is the individual who is the creator of the message or the online forum and the receiver is the individual who interprets the message or reads the message posted by the receiver. The perceptual screens which is shown in the figure 8.1 indicates to the receiver and sender's monitor screen or other media equipment through which he reads or sends the message. The feedback which is shown in the figure is the response or reaction of the receiver to the message which is conveyed to him by the sender (Kesmodel, 2007).
In the impersonal communication, the communicator transmits the message with the help of a medium. The adept interpersonal communication includes good language skill with listening and speaking capability and also the knowledge to transmit the message with conflict prevention techniques. A communicator needs theses same guidelines for impersonal online forum communication however instead of listening and speaking capabilities, he needs to be good in writing skills and should know the ...
