Interpersonal Communication A Narrative Summary

Introduction

A paradigm is a unique collection of characters. By applying the appropriate rules of the paradigms, composite characters or syntagms are formed. This mental concept of paradigm and Syntagma underlies many semiotic approaches to communication studies (Warnick, pp. 172).

Narrative theory, proposed by Walter Fisher argues that all meaningful communication is a form of narrative or report events and thus, human beings experience and understand life as a series of ongoing narratives, each with their own conflicts , characters, beginnings, middles and ends. The way in which people explain and / or justify their behavior, whether past or future, has to do with telling a credible story that produce evidence or to construct a logical argument.

Fisher proposed that, people are essentially storyteller, and their decisions depend on judgments about "good reasons" (Fisher, pp. 49). He proposes the rational and coherent narrative-fidelity and probability, as a priori basis from which to decide which are good or bad stories. Fisher argues that human communication is more than its rational form, that their cultural context and values ??and experience of the audience are important. Perhaps the most democratic or subversive implications of his ideas has to do with who is qualified to define the quality of communication. In the traditional model, expertise, as defined by the hierarchies of power required to file or prosecute the weight of any formal argument. Fisher maintains that, armed with common sense, anyone can see the point of any history of quality and judge its merits as the basis of belief and action.

So, to Fisher, the story affects every aspect of life of the individual and others in any verbal and non verbal commitment from one person to believe or act a certain way (Warnick, pp. 172). Even when a message seems abstract, narrative that is attached to the continuing story of the narrator, who has a beginning, middle, and end, and invites listeners to interpret their meaning and appreciate its value to their lives. Thus, this paper is written based on the Walter Fisher's Narrative Theory Paradigm.

The story is narrated by the mother of Arnett Doctor, who was living in the town at that time, Arnett got to know about his background on his fifth birthday through this narration of Rosewood's history by this mother. The story has been clearly narrated by Arnett's mother with believable accuracy, having the impact on her listeners with her true and emotional narration. Rosewood's story is important for the history of blacks in America, and work to avoid and face the situation if it arises again in the present times.
