Intervention Theories in relation to the African American adolescent with HIV

Introduction

There is huge number of Afro-Americans living in the United States of America. Almost 14% of the U.S. population is formulated of these Sub-Sahara African breed, who born and raised in the United States. In the social arrangement of U.S., these Afro-Americans are still considered as rearward people since they are not much involved in social, educational, financial and political fields of profession. However, from late 20th century, there is a boost in the appearance of Afro-American people at various significant platforms of U.S., but still there are various aspects, which point out that there is still white supremacy leading over black Americans, especially poor black American.

Afro-Americans are still lacking behind in various fields including education, professional industry and governance. It is due to the fact that whiteness is still considered as priority in American Culture. However, to further elucidate this discourse there are two theories, which are put under consideration to support the argumentation. Firstly, the Intersectionality Theory, which states that there are various aspects involved in formulating a social arrangement, which includes sex, gender, socio-economic class, color etc. Whereas, the second theory is Critical Race Theory, it is much broader phenomenon that illustrates the component of race in American society.

These two theories are interrelated with the Afro-American culture in United States. However, this paper is formulated to cover a particular problem that Afro-American children are opposing. The increased rate of H.I.V. diagnosing is merely the fact that this particular race is not being treated on the same scale as other races of the country. This paper will elaborate the relation between these intervention theories and the rising trend of HIV in Afro-American adolescents.

Background Study

There are two theories covered in this research proposal to expand the understanding of the phenomenon, which is under discussion. The two theories include “Intersectionality Theory” and “Critical Race Theory” that are discussed as follows.

Intersectionality Theory

The Intersectionality Theory was first proposed by Kimberle Crenshaw, in 1989. This theory states that social structure is formulated of various variables, which interact to form this arrangement. This theory primarily argues with other sociological theories. It states that other sociological theories only consider and examine one variable at a time, while researching within a particular social realm. Whereas, this theory believes that various factors, including gender, sex, race, age and socio-economic class which affect the societal structure with in a culture (Elizabeth, R. C. 2008).

However, it is not as simple as it seems. It is not just the sum of different identities added together, but it is more of the intersecting experience of multiple identities, which formulates the phenomenon of family and community. This theory is principally a feminist approach. In 1990s, this theory was once again coined by Collins, who related this concept with Black Feminism (Shields, S. A. 2008).
