Hispanic

Hispanics, furthermore known as Chicanas/os or Latinas/os, are the largest ethnic minority group in the joined States. In 2001, the U.S. Census reported that Hispanics constituted 12% of the U.S. population, with 66% of these identifying as Mexican-heritage. However, this percentage underestimates the large number of Hispanics that enter the United States illegally and are routinely missed by census workers. By 2015, Hispanics will constitute the majority school-age population in the southwestern states, and dramatic increases in the school-age population of Hispanics in the South and the Midwest will be evidenced. Hispanic students are receiving much attention by researchers, educators, policymakers, and the media because, with the exception of the first wave of Cuban immigrants who came to the United States after Fidel Castro rose to power in 1959, as a group, Hispanics have the highest rates of academic difficulties and school dropout of any ethnic group in the United States. They are also severely underrepresented in higher education and in professional occupations.(Huddy 1997)

Family ties are very strong: when someone travels to another town or city to study or for a short visit (e.g., holidays, business, medical reasons), with family or friends of family members is common practice. Families often gather to celebrate holidays, birthdays, baptisms, first communions, graduations and weddings. Hispanic families instill in their children the importance of honor, decency and respect for authority and elders. Spanish language maintenance within the family is a common practice in most Hispanic households.(Groves 1985)
