Introduction

This article is based on answers to certain questions on terrorism. Here we are using references from 'Straight talk on terrorism' by Ahmad and 'Trying to define terrorism' by Keeley in 2002. Terrorism is a broad term and every one defines it in his own way. We have to discuss these questions in the light of the mentioned books of authors.

Reasons for difficulty in defining terrorism

The first problem with the term is the notion of terror and whether or not it should be central to the concept of terrorism. Its origins can be traced back to the eighteenth century when the new French state used organized and systematic terror to deal with its enemies. The second problem with the term is its ambiguity. This can be seen in its highly selective usage during the conflict in Northern Ireland. The political violence perpetrated by the IRA was always labeled as terrorism by the British government. A third problem with the definition is that it generally excludes any reference to violence perpetuated by states. (Ahmed, 2002)

Criteria for defining terrorism

If we consider the meaning of the word "terrorism" on the one hand, and its fallout and traces left on human life on the other, we note that terrorism may be carried out on different levels. There is a terrorism which threatens security, honour, property and the like; there is a cultural terrorism which tears human identity apart, and leads to the abyss of perdition and aimlessness; there is an information terrorism which deprives man of his freedom to breathe in an unpolluted atmosphere. We can cite other types of terrorism such as economic terrorism, scientific terrorism, diplomatic terrorism, military terrorism, etc. (Ahmed, 2002)
