Introduction

Throughout the history, men have tried to find ways to improve the quality of healthcare that is provided to individuals. The field of nursing, in this regard, has witnessed a prominent change in its functionality due to the development of relevant theories over the time. These theories not only have helped the domain in research but also have helped in educating the healthcare professionals. There are some moral values that need to be considered before someone chooses this career. None of the nurses would enter the profession before they are sure about the fact that their values and interests will never be in conflict with the professional values. All of these values and beliefs that they hold are mainly discussed in the theories that have evolved over the time.

It is important to note that these values and beliefs of the nurses form a framework for these healthcare professionals to perform their job responsibly. Although, the theories have helped in making these nurses aware about their job responsibilities and the responsibility of care that they have to render to the patient, it is not necessary that the healthcare professionals necessary have to consult these theories (Basavanthappa, 2007). It is all about the level of compassion that one has in his heart. This compassion helps these nurses in understanding the nature of illness of the patient and in providing a cure for the pain that the patient is suffering from. The domain of nursing has changed with time due to the societal changes that has been evidently witnessed. It is the change in the pattern of lifestyle that has changed the role of a nurse over the time.

People have become more conscious about their health, which eventually has become a reason for these nurses to acquire more knowledge of the field so that they can easily cater the changing needs of the patients accordingly. Due to the changing healthcare needs of the patients, the healthcare system, globally, has changed. This in turn has made the job of the nurses difficult and challenging (Benner, Tanner & Chesla, 2009). The ones that are passionate and compassionate are the ones that are going to survive in the field because there is no place for the ones in the nursing profession that do not have a heart to feel the pain of the patient. Nursing is not about diagnosing the diseases; it is about the amount of care that an individual can render to the patient.

It is the caring practices in the nursing profession that are over-emphasized by the theorists so that the aim of the particular field could be highlighted. There are complex situations that these nurses have to go through but it takes compassion to make it through all these troubles (McSherry, McSherry & Watson, 2012).
