Background

The historicity of all supernatural elements in the Gospels assign its creation mythological speculation between the death of Jesus and the writing of the Gospels by the second generation of believers from a mythological template is questionable in view of researchers.

The first achievement is of course that Jesus existed. Despite the negatives raised by anti-clerical circles in France in the early twentieth century and still current debates in the Anglo-Saxons, one can consider that the existence of Jesus is a finding of common sense.

The current consensus of many historians and scholars, Jesus would have died under the prefect Pontius Pilate in 30 AD, more exactly 7 April 30. This conclusion, which follows the tradition of the Gospel of John, is deducted from the intersection of many textual clues and what is known about the celebration of Passover. Jesus is the contemporary and compatriot of Herod Antipas.

The beginning of Jesus' public ministry, located by Luke "the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar," is put between the years 27 and 28, which gives the activity of Jesus duration of two and a half years.

The date of the birth of Jesus is against much more difficult to establish. This may seem paradoxical, since this date marks the beginning of the Christian era and is based on our calendar! But the subsequent establishment of the early Christian era, based on calculations made by Dionysius the little in the sixth century, involved errors. Despite indications of Luke at the beginning of his narrative of the birth of Jesus, historians are not clear regarding the edict census which was obeyed Mary and Joseph. There were many at that time and census data do not match.

If one follows the statement given at the beginning of Luke in public life: "Jesus, in its infancy, was thirty years" (Lk 3:23), and if one believes that he began his ministry in 27, we come to the conclusion that he was born in -4 (because there is no year zero). Other comparisons suggest that he was born somewhat -5 or -6 before the Christian era. Such is the opinion more generally. This ignorance is not unique to the case of Jesus.

When in Bethlehem, the place of Jesus' birth, it is known by the accounts of Matthew and Luke. It has been questioned by some historians due to the fact that John seems to ignore it. Jesus is called the Nazarene and is reputed to come from this village. But nothing is decisive about it. Jesus lived and grew up in Galilee, Nazareth, a village rather despised. Between the beginning of the prosecution and the passion of Jesus, it is not possible to reconstruct the chronological sequence of his movements and key events.
