John Chambers was born on August 23, 1949 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. In 1971, after graduating from West Virginia University, received a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences. Later, in 1974, received his doctorate in jurisprudence. In 1975, he received a Master of Business Administration from Indiana University. For eight years he worked at Wang Laboratories (1982-1990.) From 1976 to 1982, Chambers worked at IBM. In 1991, he began his work at Cisco as vice president of Worldwide Sales and Operations. In 1995 Chambers was appointed President and CEO of Cisco.

Management Style and Skills

As chief executive of Cisco Systems, Chambers is one of those businessmen who appear repeatedly in the lists of most admired American entrepreneurs. He is recognized as manager and guru of Cisco. The 'preacher' of new technology ensures that there has been no economic phenomenon in history "that has had an influence network," and believes that "most legislators do not understand the new economy" (Scholtes, 2008).

Chamber follows democratic style of leadership, which is characterized by the provision of a subordinate autonomy within their functions and their qualifications. This is a collegial style that gives greater freedom of subordinates under the supervision of the head. Head-Democrat prefers such mechanisms of action, which appeal to the needs of a higher level: participation, belonging, self-expression.
