Scarce provision of Government Hospitals in Karachi

Executive Summary

This report highlights that demographic and health status in Pakistan is formed by the elevated birth rate, the relatively small Fatality rate and the resulting rapid demographics growth. This paper presents a case study of two surveys conducted in Karachi health care sector, related to adult fatality and maternal health. Crude death rate is estimated at thirteen point six per thousand. The high mortality has been due to many issues out of which one is the Kidney Trafficking issue in the Government hospitals of Karachi. The issue of kidney trafficking has been very high in Karachi Government Hospitals. Government must take this issue seriously to resolve this particular problem. (Hasan, 2009, pp.203-206)

Incident of the Kidney trafficking in Karachi

There was a meeting presided over by Dr. Adib Rizvi who is the President of Society for urology affairs and it was attended by the members of Executive Committee, counsellors and large number of society members from all over the country. The meeting discussed the issue that there is a need for the notice to be taken of the large number of foreign patients travelling to Pakistan for kidney transplantation with the help of paid donors. The vendors have always been the most underprivileged and poor member of the society in Pakistan who have been exploited to sell their kidneys. There is one organization called Human Organ Transplant Authority that is instructed with the responsibility of monitoring transplantation in the country has completely failed in curbing this activity. The General Body of this organization collectively appealed to the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan for taking immediate members to stop this illegal transplant activity because Pakistan is becoming one of the top markets for organ transplantation. The appeal was even made to the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take up recent case of Saudi national that died in Saudi Arabia soon after having an illegal transplant in Karachi and his father had complained to the Saudi authorities. So far, Pakistani authorities have not been able to bring the culprits to justice. There are many culprits who are involved in this illegal crime. This is the reason why regular seminars and workshops are held by the NGOs to raise awareness on this issue. There are many people dying because of this illegal business and the mortality level has reached up to 70,000 patients which mean that serious steps are needed to be taken to resolve this serious issue.
