It lies along the border between California and Nevada, west of Carson City, Nevada. Their depth is 1645 feet (501 m), so the second deepest, (Crater Lake in Oregon is the deepest at 1945 feet (594 m) deep).

The lake was formed about 2 million years ago and is a part of the Lake Tahoe with the modern form of lake during the Ice Age. The lake is known for the clarity of the water and the panorama of surrounding mountains on all sides. The area surrounding the lake is also known as Lake Tahoe, or simply Tahoe.

It is home to a number of ski resorts in summer, outdoor recreation and tourist attractions. Tahoe is also the 16th in the world's deepest lake and the fifth deepest in average depth. It is about 22 miles (35 km) long and 12 miles (19 km) wide and 72 miles (116 km) of coastline and an area of 191 square miles (490 km2).

The southern coast is dominated by the largest lake in the city, South Lake Tahoe, California, which borders the town of Stateline, Nevada, while Tahoe City, California, is located in northwestern Lake the coast. Although road-term view of the shore of Lake Tahoe for much of its perimeter, many important parts of the coast are now within state parks or are protected by the Forest Service of the United States.

Topography and Geology
