At the same time that women have progressed in business leadership and entrepreneurship, a debate has risen in research and the popular press as to whether gender matters in leadership.

Are women less assertive?

Are men more decisive?

Are men better at numbers and women better at managing people?

Can women make the “tough” decisions?

Answers to these questions are varied, depending on one's perspective: whether one believes that men and women are more similar in their leadership, or that women lead differently. Following a general definition of leadership as an ability to inspire and influence beliefs, attitudes, and behavior of others, (Kotter 1990) this entry explores these two perspectives about women in business leadership.

Dr Cheick Diarra is head person of Microsoft Africa. Born in Mali Cheick graduated from Marie-Curie University, Paris, and furthermore has a Ph.D. in Mechanical / Aerospace Engineering from Howard University, Washington DC, in the USA. His learned backdrop has prepared him well for his position as the First head boss Officer of the African Virtual University. He is Vice-President of the UN World-Science Ethics managing group, a constituent of the unaligned commission on Africa and the Millennium and a member of the African amalgamation / NEPAD Panel on Biotechnology. Furthermore, Cheick is a UNESCO generosity Ambassador for Science, Technology and Enterprise and is also Founder and leader of the African Summit on Science and New Technologies. In 1999 he conceived the Pathfinder base for Education and Development.

Dr Alioune Sall (Senegal) is actually the boss Director of the African Futures organisation, an African platform for potential thinking to facilitate the formulation by African nations of endogenous development forms and advances to achieve social fairness, safeguard the dignity of their people and win the 21st century battle. He retains a Doctorate in Sociology from Université de Paris VII. Prior to being allotted to African Futures task in 1996 as local Coordinator, he held some places in joined Nations Development Programme head office in New York and South Africa. Before joining UNDP, he undertook research focusing on development of pastoral societies and human resources development in Sahel. Dr Sall is member of the Task Force of Cultural signs of Human Development in Africa.
