Introduction

Leadership has been defined in many and sometimes contradictory ways. We use the following concept because (a) it expresses leadership in terms of behaviours that are practical for leaders to adopt, and (b) it reconciles the controversy between normative and situational leadership schema on the assumption that the two camps have been concerned with important, but entirely different, aspects of leadership.

Leadership is not merely a series of skills or task; rather, it is an attitude that informs behaviour (Cook, 2001, p. 38). Each individual will have the opportunity to lead. If the individual has the desire and willpower, they can become an effective leader. Leaders go through a process of continuous change, self study, education, training and experience. The ability to influence a group towards the achievement of a vision or a set of goals is a leader.

There are various roles nurses will encounter throughout their role in professional nursing. As one grows with the profession, so does the individuals style of leading. Every situation a nurse encounters is different, preparing the nurse to be flexible and adaptive. Two leadership styles that stand out today in nursing are Transactional leadership and Transformational leadership. The two leadership styles will be discussed in how they pertain in professional nursing practice.

Transactional and Transformational Leadership

In today's humanity leadership methods, Transactional leadership and Transformational leadership are utilised in nursing on an every day basis. Transactional leadership has one significant role; organising by exception. Transformational leadership displays 3 characteristics; charisma, individualized concern, and thoughtful stimulation. Transactional managers double-check the needed allotment is finished by employees on a day by day basis.

A report by Medley and Larochelle (1995), asserted Transactional managers are more productive by giving swaps for rewards. The foremost and follower exchange pays founded on the needed assignment. This leadership method is most attractive for getting short period goals. The foremost does not take the initiative. As long as the allotment is accomplished the foremost will not intervene. Transformational managers disagree from Transactional managers by boosting other ones as well as the worth of work associated conclusions for subordinates. Transformational managers not only organises the group to entire assignments inside a certain timeframe, but boosted the one-by-one to become a more effective group player.
