Contingency Theory of Leadership

The advancements in the business environment have given birth to a number of leadership theories that are relevant to individuals. Among those theories is Contingency Leadership which holds a significant role in the modern schools on though regarding leadership. Our perception of this theory is bound to have a major impact on our application of this theory as we lead and develop as leaders over time. The theory states that success for a leader in a particular situation can be guaranteed merely on the basis of the skills that he/she possesses. There are a number of external factors that play a role in the extent of success a leader attains. Those in favor of this leadership theory hold the view that leaders following this theory must take into consideration the appropriate methods of solving issues.

Contingency theory holds similarity to the situational leadership; however contingency leadership, unlike situational leadership, focuses less on the adaptation of style of leadership citing the external factors. The main emphasis of this theory is to regard the manner in which other factors can influence in uncommon ways and alter the outcome. Proponents also believe that success may be rather tough to predict (Achua & Lussier, 2012).

It is true that a person may not be able to change his or her innate leadership qualities even by consciously making efforts in this regard. Nonetheless, what can be done is that a person (in case the leader) can make a watchful eye on the interactions and the external factors that limit the leadership potential. After making efforts, if one sees a positive change on his or her leadership abilities due to an externality, one should keep on developing on the strength.
