Planning for Teaching and Learning: Unit Plan

Unit Plan: Billabong State School

In this assignment, we would discuss the unit plan for teaching dance (as a physical activity) to the students at Billabong State School. The curriculum, instruction methods, school priorities and importance of physical activity in school would be thoroughly explained in our unit plan.

Part A: Rationale

The Health and Physical Education (HPE) in schools are a part of the school curriculum in Queensland. It plays a vital role in children's primary education. It does so, by teaching them healthy and active living. The Billabong State School is situated in Central Northern Queensland. The main focus of the unit plan is to educate students and assist their physical and mental development.

The unit titled; “Lets dance” is designed to teach students dance. It would also allow them to understand how to maintain body balance; along with teaching them basic body movements and dance routines. These activities allow students to express their emotions and feelings with their body movements. The unit plan would primarily focus on the vitality of a healthy life. The program would expand the students' awareness on physical activity and importance of a healthy lifestyle.

The promotion of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle would be obtained by allowing the students to indulge in dancing activities. The students would be able to perform the activities in a number of social events after the school timings.

The unit incorporates a holistic approach to the maintenance of health and overall well being of individuals. Based on the (K&U) strand “a regular participation in physical activity can improve movement capacities, personal development and ensure a healthy life” (Queensland Studies Authority, 2007). The curriculum authority proposes to implement and justify basic plans and actions to promote a healthy lifestyle, improved movement capacities and personal development”. The program “Lets dance” would be focused on the development of movement skills in school children, application of safer practices and inducing teamwork and participation in activities.

Physical education i.e. dancing plays a key role in the HPE Curriculum. Dancing plays a major role in increasing social cohesion, inducing better group values. Overall, it develops a heightened sense of body awareness. On the other hand, it also aids the development and maturation of confidence and social skills. Creative expression and individuality is enhanced in students; the healthy living also fosters a sense of peace (ACARA, 2009).

The performance of children in other subjects also improves when they indulge in physical activities. The physical exertion allows the brain to clear up and relax. Hence, physical activity in schools assists healthy development and promotes a lifelong active lifestyle (Smart Moves, 2008). The proposed lessons relating to cultural dance are consistent with the expectation of parents, and communities that dance are suitable to all ages.
