ABSTRACT

In order to understand the current state of research in Management, the article leads to examine the research paradigms that underlie it, to this way it is possible to explain the differences between the various theoretical choices and / or methodology adopted throughout the history of research in management. Thus, proposes an argument first presented by Larrinaga on the issue that research alternative to mainstream best explains the operation of management based on current philosophical ideas and internally consistent. The article aims to understand the current state of research in Management. This leads to examining the research paradigms that underlie it, to this possible way to explain the differences between the various theoretical choices and / or methodology adopted throughout the history of research in management. Therefore, we examined the research from studies of Burrell and Morgan and Laughlin, who characterized the paradigms in functionalist, interpretive and critical. A research paradigm is to Kuhn a set of beliefs, values and techniques shared by some community members (scientific or research). " Deciphering a paradigm is important because it allows "to define what should be studied, that issues should be raised, as they should be raised, and that rules must be taken in interpreting the responses.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background

Studies such as those of Burrell and Morgan, Hopper and Powell, Chua; Laughlin and Lowe, Laughlin, Jonsson and Macintosh; Larrinaga, Saudagar and Tell, Bhimani, Searcy and Mentzer, among others, highlight the existence and evolution of different paradigms in research. (Kelemen 2008, 228) Here are the studies of research paradigms, showing reflections on functionalism, interpretive and critical research in management. We conclude with some reflections on the importance of paradigms for research. (Hassard 2008, 89)

Burrell and Morgan classified the different paradigms management, according to two criteria. The first, in the horizontal axis refers to the philosophical position that assumes the research on the nature of social science, differentiating the objective perspective of subjective. (Hassard 2008, 27) The second, on the vertical axis, is centered on the point of view it has on the nature of society, radical approach to differentiating regulatory approach. (Hassard 2008, 37) In order to overcome the criticism on simplifying the conceptual model of Burrell and Morgan, raised by Willmott, Laughlin proposes an analysis broader conceptual basis of three dimensions: the choice ...
