Maternal Mortality in India

Outline

Introduction:

In this research paper we are going to discuss the maternal mortality in India in details.

Discussion

In the discussion part we mainly focus on the factors that cause high mortality rate in India and these factors are:

1. Revealed failures in service delivery

2. Weak data systems

3. Discontinuity of care

4. Unsupported health workers

5. Haphazard referral systems

Challenges and recommendation:

In this part we discuss about the main challenges that government is facing and what can be done to improve this situation.

Conclusion

Maternal Mortality in India

Introduction

The subject of this research paper is maternal mortality, the country which I have picked is India. India is a developing nation which has a high rate of maternal mortality. This rate becomes too high outside of the inner-city environs of India. In this paper paper we are going to discuss all the elements which advances to this situation.

In 1998, the maternal mortality in India, the principle determinants were: anemia (24%), pregnancy and puerperium (23%), abortion (12%), eclampsia and toxaemia (10%), puerperal sepsis (10 %), bleeding, offspring, the mother of the Prime Minister (7%) and (14%) 0.1 These statistics uncover these losses of life which are preventable with obstetric care .. This makes the non-achievement of efforts to improve pregnant women's outcomes tragic. (AED 2006)

In this paper, I will look at an example from a study in Koppal, one of the poorest districts in south India. The study was conducted by George (2007) The study was undertaken in about 60 villages where the population is 82,000 population (George, 2007). Here explain HOW the study was undertaken include whether it was qualitative or quantitative, how many people, who the people were and how long the study was. Write this in FOUR simple sentences. (Jamison 2006)

Discussion

In the discussion part we mainly focus on the factors that cause high mortality rate in India and these factors are:

Revealed failures in service delivery

Field observations make known the following service delivery failings: weak information systems, discontinuity of care, unsupported health workers, random referral systems and distorted accountability mechanisms. ( Indian Council of Medical Research Task Force 1992)

Weak information systems

Although all deaths are presumed to be reported, this does not hold factual for all maternal deaths. according to George (2007) 10 cases of maternal mortality was reported from one taluka, the remaining three talukas of Koppal district did not report even one maternal death. In a rural study in Anantpur, in the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh, as many as 66% of maternal deaths had not been reported by health providers.

Even when documented, the formats employed by government services to report maternal deaths gather the barest biomedical plus demographic details. This does not allow an analysis of where failures occurred and what could have been done to put away the woman's life. In Kusuma's case, the features of her death were reviewed in less than five minutes at the end of a four-hour taluka meeting. The major outcome of the review was to ...
