The Essay Question

The essay question for this module requires the students to write about their aim and ambition in life. Therefore, the essay question is “The Person Who I Love Most”.

Justifications for the Use of Essay Question

Essay questions undeniably test the depth of a student's knowledge of a subject. Students must start from a blank space and fill it with their own thoughts. For an essay like 'the person who I like most' it is necessary that the students are asked to write an essay instead of making them answer using the multiple choice questions. No faking is possible. In order to write a comprehensive and accurate essay question 'the person who I love most', the student must have intimate understanding of the topic and. And even beyond this substantive test, essay questions train students to use analytical skills in combination with articulation to properly and thoroughly explain a position, describe a process or recount the effects of a particular event.

While there are many advantages of using multiple-choice question (MCQ), there are also many limitations in using such items. The first one is that constructing good questions is time consuming. This causes a lot of time to be spent on the formation of good questions and takes up a lot of time of the teachers; therefore, essays are more suitable. Essay will help to evaluate higher levels of learning while the students will answer this question. It is a great method to use when you are interested to see how your students can analyze, synthesize or evaluate information.

In formulating MCQs it is difficult to find plausible distracters. While forming questions for MCQs, it is important that the teachers use appropriate plausible distracters so that the students get confused while attempting the question. Though this is also a method by which the brainstorming activity of the student can be analyzed, but is not reliable. Essay questions can range from a few sentences to multiple pages. Writing an essay on 'the person who I love most' will require students to express themselves in writing, which is a valuable life skill, and provide insight into your students' understanding of the material.
