Abstract

The purpose of this study was to understand the affects of media on adolescent children of the United States of America. It focuses on the negative effects of media portrayed on teenagers through several ways. It also discusses some treatment methods which help in overcoming the negative impact of media on children.

How the media affects children and what we can do about it

Introduction

Media nearly all across the globe have had a very influential impact on nearly every generation. Similarly it is the responsibility of the concerned authority to show programs that are realistic and accurate based that its influence is factual and true. Media in the United States has toured a long path ever since the publication of its first news paper in 1690 in Boston, Not only this magazines also became a part of the American cities within 50 years. Print media's monopoly ended in the 20th century with the introduction of commercial radio. The coverage of radio was soon available nationwide all over America offering access to live programs. Later after World War II another power communication medium came into existence. This addition actually hampered the monopoly of print media and then later the radios. With the passage of time the availability of TV channels to the overseas audience made the era more advanced. It was then the advent of telephones followed by computers and internet geared the generation into the 21st century.

The rapid changes in communication faced by people in the United States over the past five years made the society more dependent. Since the society as a whole exercised the modern means of communication in nearly all walks of life. This reliance on media addicted the new generation and eventually it became as a source of influence. Similarly, vulnerability of immoral activities became evident all across USA. These activates have to be eradicated in order to make the society better. But the role that media has been playing seems to have plunged the youth badly.

Media is responsible for deteriorating the ethical and moral values of the teenagers in the United States of America

Easy access to the media has made things easier and the influence has jumped to such a degree that many people, particularly adolescent girls have started suffering from psychological and physical disorders. These young girls tend to make an outright effort to copy the eating habits along with the appearances and ideal body image of the models. Their influence has increased to such an extinct that they in reality dress up like celebrities, and their exposure towards sex has also increased (Karmen, 2000). Portraying to be sexy and engaging in sexual intercourse is normally seen in nearly all the television shows and movies. In order to become a part of the glamorized world females indulge themselves in sexual encounters.
