CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to explore and compare the responsibility of the medical practitioners in Greece and United Kingdom while treating the domestic violence hence maintaining confidentiality. It will also limit and define the role of physicians in intervening with the patients who suffers domestic violence hence increases their effectiveness. This study also outlines the importance of confidentiality of patients who suffers domestic violence.

Background of the Study

There is a key role to play by the medical profession in early provision, intervention and detection for the specialized treatment of individuals who suffers the consequences of the domestic violence whether it is the emotional, sexual or physical. It is the responsibility of the physicians to participate in the community wide efforts that mainly strengthens and establishes the resources for perpetrator of the domestic violence. The women after going through a domestic violence interact with the health care system first for emergency and routine care before they turn to domestic violence services and law enforcements. The health care system in United Kingdom and Greece works immensely with the service providers and domestic violence advocates. They respond to victims of domestic violence through referral, intervention, documentation, assessments and screening.

Problem Statement

The abuse and violence is a very significant issue in the United States. The victims are usually of all ages and gender. The physicians usually play a very critical role in the health care systems in reaction to the domestic violence. The health of the public impacts in terms of lives harmed and lives lost likely and immeasurably. In the health care system and in variety of settings these problems persist. Such victims should be assisted appropriately by the physicians. In today's society the physicians should overview the domestic violence and problem of family in order to assist in meeting the legal and ethical obligations that the physicians has in appropriately managing and recognizing the issues as it might affect the families and the patient himself.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of this study is to:

To identify the physicians responsibilities in Greece and Unite Kingdom while treating a patient who is suffering from domestic violence.

To define the confidentiality of the patients in health care settings and compare the domestic violence with confidentiality practices in U.K and Greece.
