In 1867/68, the Tokugawa era encountered an end in the Meiji Restoration. The emperor Meiji was transferred from Kyoto to Tokyo which became the new capital; his imperial power was restored. The real political power was conveyed from the Tokugawa Bakufu into the hands of a tiny gathering of nobles and first samurai. (Murphey 121-145)
