From the very unfastening of The Metamorphosis, Gregor is depicted as a rather pathetic character. He works hard for his family in a job that he detests, and obtains little, if any, acknowledgement for his efforts. He likes the best for each of his family constituents, and he likes despairingly to be loved by them.
