Comparison of 3 methodological approaches undertaken in 3 Research studies on Airline Industry

Introduction

In this research paper, methodological approaches of 3 different peer reviewed tourism journal articles from the journal “Tourism Management” have been compared. The first article is on the topic of changing gender representation in airline/aviation industry. This research study has identified the trends related to gender representation in airline industry have been discussed. In this article, the influence of different media such as contemporary electronic, celluloid and print has been discussed and the role of media in affecting life as well as career choices especially from the perspective of gender is conferred. According to the article, e-media imagery holds more power than ever before to influence life, especially career choices of a person. New generation especially now take their input from the imagery shown on the media in making their career decision and media has played an important role in helping women to gain more representation in careers that were previously dominant by the their male counterparts. Airline industry has always been portrayed as more glamorous on media than any other industry in the world. Working in the sky is now a dream of many who want to work as a cabin crew or a pilot. Working for an airline is a glamorous attraction and fascination for potential entrants regardless of the technical demands and other job-related pressures that are reality of airline industry and most of the people who aspire to work for airlines are aware of such demands. Commercial aviation has successfully stirred a variety of idealistic and romantic literature and various recollections (real life based) together with thoughtful academic analysis. In this research article, the paper in particular has charted the representation of the work by flight attendant of femal gender right from its golden era that is considered ideal by many, to its present ongoing era where the model of low cost and inexpensive airline has fundamentally influenced the working conditions and environment within airline industry. The discussion in this research article is focused on broad genre of the employment literature related to airline industry that is drawing on biographical, comic and romantic accounts together with the sources which address this topic and theme from research/academic perspective. This research article has attempted to uncover whether contemporary representation of gender in airline industry is any more a real reflection of this kind of work as compared to the work during previous generations. This research article has undertaken this analysis and drawn upon the career and role representation literature.
