Introduction

Technology has globalized over the past century and regardless of it being viewed as good or harmful, it is obviously here to stay. Current day and the future belong mainly to the telecommunication industry. The telephony concept and its uses have changed and evolved over the years. Information technology has always been powerful but even then few could have predicted when cellular technology was invented how this sector would progress and bring about social change in not just developing countries, but rural as well.

Technology - Mobile phones

Abraham Graham Bell changed how people communicated with each other and how societies interact more than a century ago, back in 1876 when he invented the telephone. Since then the method has evolved and Cellular phone technology has taken over the market as well as brought social changes. The modern mobile is distinguished by a setup of cells in use and is known as cellular telephone technology. Radio waves develop a communication of various cells, each with numerous channels, maintains a connection between the mobile device and the radio base station. The cells are used and shared amongst various users (Goggin, 2006).

Social Change

Social movements are meant to bring social change, partial or complete. Even though this movement is meant to bring a change in the ideas, norms and values of the present setup some efforts are being made at the same time by forces who want to maintain the existing state of affairs by resisting changes, which is defensive and not innovative at all (Sociology guide, 2011). The transformation of culture and social institutions have been referred to as the social changes brought about over a period of time, normally done so by collective behavior (Kendall, 2004).

Society has revolutionized since the adoption of cell phone as a means for communication as well as entertainment, redefining models of communal contact and associations amongst people. The cell phone has altered everyday life of people to such a degree that it is capable of being considered a driving force of social change. It has given people more personal freedom as it is a personalized wireless device. On the contrary, it has distorted the borderline between personal and public life. Apart from being a communication tool, this gadget has become a fashion tool that shapes a person's identity and status, developing a brand new type of subculture, more so amongst adolescents.

Studies have shown that even though cellular technology has affected people of all ages and types, it is the adolescents who are the most enthusiastic user group in almost all western and eastern countries. It is not an uncommon view to come across adolescents in Asia, U.S, Europe, and other parts of the world clicking away on their handheld phones in public spaces, practicing innovative ways to communicate, introduce and give rise to a new subculture that has its own set of values, norms and behavioral rules.
