Introduction

Spas are a mode of relaxation that people choose in order to relieve themselves of stress and fatigue. Choosing spa treatment not only eases and relaxes the person but also gives various other body treatments. Basically, spa treatments are used for their relaxing effect on the whole body. They help a person in relaxing physically and mentally both. Therefore it is extremely essential that in order to satisfy the customers and giving them the required treatments and therapy in a total hygienic environment. We must be able to efficiently prepare and monitor the spa area, and then maintain it. (Porter,1990)

Safe Working Practices

Preparing the spa area includes that we make sure that our environment is safe and healthy by ensuring appropriate work place policies, manual handling, providing equipment for personal protection, managing policies related to health and safety at work, providing proper equipment for work and defining the rules for using them, precautions for fire, first aid, instructions for reporting injuries and issues etc.

Regarding the disposal of waste, one should enforce the use of single use items and that they are disposed of properly after being used once, environment should be protected from the hazardous or contaminated wastes and spillages.

The work area should be steered cleared of any extra trailing wires that shouldn't be there, any kind of obstructions, the lightening of the salon should be appropriate and the natural lightening should also be managed accordingly, the tools and equipment that the therapist plans to use should be kept properly and in appropriate safe positions so that there is no problem reaching them while working. Proper and clean dustbins should be placed within reach so that waste can be disposed off easily. All the seats should be clean and covered and one should also check if all the tools that are to be used are clean and disinfected. The electrical equipment that is to be used should be checked beforehand. The water levels should also be checked in accordance with the procedure along with its temperature. Also fresh water should be provided and tested according to the policy of the salon and the manufacturer's instructions. Safety checks should be carried out to identify hazards if any.

Client Hygiene and Safety

To prepare the client before his or her spa treatment, one should make sure that the client is very relaxed and comfortable. The client should be positioned in an appropriate posture with his clothing removed where required. She should be given a head band to protect her hair and proper gown or clothing to protect her modesty. One should ensure that the client does not have any piercing or jewellery or contact lenses on. The client should also be given disposable briefs and disposable slippers. It is also important that the client showers before any equipment is used on her body. (Hembry, 1990)
