CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background

With over 300 years of history and expertise in banking, Barclays operates in over 50 countries and employs over 145,000 people and it moves, lends, invests and protects money for customers and clients worldwide. Barclays continue to believe that their integrated universal banking strategy is the best model to serve their customers and clients as well as optimising risk-adjusted returns for our shareholders. A satisfied and motivated work force can undoubtedly help sustain productivity. Locke (1976) lists some individual characteristics of workers which can affect their level of motivation. They include demographic factors like: age, sex, education, position occupied and length of service. He added that job motivation plays an important role in employee commitment and in reducing employee absenteeism and boredom at work. Smith (1992) believed that motivation and high morale could lead to cost reduction by reducing absences, errors and turnovers which leads to greater productivity and economic and industrial growth which is a major drive of most organisations. (Selmer 2005 68-84)

Rationale

Organization is defined as an integrated system of people and resources to achieve collective goals. There are two basic reasons for organizational existence. One is profit maximization and another is maximizing shareholder value. The latest studies suggest that employee needs must be taken into account by the organizational leaders as this will ensure the sustainability of the company in the long term.

Research question

The research aims to answer the following question

How Barclays bank motivate its employee?

What are the success factors for Barclays bank?

How the bank competes in the international market and how organizational environment and culture plays a role in its success?

Significance

This research holds importance because it will fill out the gaps in the existing literature and open new horizon for future research.
