The Plot

The play “Much Ado about Nothing” is written by Shakespeare. Though it is a comedy, yet it contains quite a lot of dark elements in some of the characters.

The night before the wedding Don John is ready to execute his villainous plan. Everyone was preparing for the wedding of Claudio and Hero, but Don John has decided to ruin everyone's happiness. He tells Claudio a of Hero's impurity. His companions, Margaret and Borachio, disguise Margaret as Hero in the darkness of the night. Claudio and Don Pedro, misunderstands Margaret as Hero and consider her to be unfaithful. Infuriated, Claudio humiliates Hero by revealing her infidelity in front of everyone. She is shocked by the accusation and faints in the public. Hero's family believed her and thought her to be innocent and decide to hide her and pretend that she is dead while waiting for the truth to come in front of everyone. Assuming, that Hero is dead, people start turning against Claudio. He is blamed for accusing Hero and is being held responsible for her death. Then Dogberry removes the masks of innocence from Don John's face. After this Claudio realizes that he was being fooled by Don John and had blamed Hero without any reason. (Evans, 1997)

The reason for the plot

Don John is the most villainous character in the play. He is the reason behind everything that went wrong. He has his motives of showing his evil character. He never got a chance to enjoy the same opportunities as his brother did. He faces inferiority complex and feels that no one loves him. This feeling has made him see the world from a pessimistic perspective. He always wanted to be a villain so that he could ruin the happiness of everyone else. Since he was not happy, he does not want people surrounding him to be happy either. Instead of being happy for his brother's success he never had any positive feelings, love or affection for his brother. His hatred for his brother was not his fault. He has been called “a bastard child” and was kept away from being a king. His evilness made him go against everyone. He did not want to see anyone happy. These feelings when combined became a huge reason for him to plot against Claudio and Hero.
