Introduction

During the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance, devices were utilised mainly as accompaniment for singers. String players would play along with the tune line vocalised by the singer. There were furthermore solely instrumental ensembles, often of joined antecendent of the violin family; called consorts some analysts address the source of academic instrumental ensembles to be the sonata da camera (chamber sonata) and the sonata da chiesa (church sonata). These were compositions for one to five or more instruments. Benefits

During the Baroque time span, sleeping room melodies as a genre was not apparently defined. Often, works could be performed on any kind of devices, in orchestral or sleeping room ensembles. The Art of the Fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach, for demonstration, can be performed on a keyboard equipment (harpsichord or organ) or by a string quartet or string orchestra. The instrumentation of trio sonatas was furthermore often flexibly specified; some of Handel's sonatas are tallied for "German flute, Hoboy [oboe] or Violin" Bass lines could be performed by violone, cello, theorbo, or bassoon, and occasionally three or four devices would connect in the bass line in unison. Sometimes composers blended movements for sleeping room ensembles with orchestral movements.
