Nature vs. Nurture argument

Introduction

One of the most known debated topics is “Nature versus Nurture”. “Nature” means individual's inborn qualities and on the other hand “Nurture” means personal experiences. This debate is one of the oldest issues related to psychology. (McLeod, 2007) The debate revolves around the environmental factors and genetic inheritance of human development. Our mind is a clear board, whatever we are and all the knowledge we own is due to our experiences. We are free to choose the best or worst option for our self. Nowadays, most of the experts believe that development and behaviour are achieved by nature and nurture together. The physical characteristics such as eye color, hair style (curly or straight), and number of diseases like Huntingdon's chorea are all inherent in our genes. Hair loss, weight, height, expectancy of life and susceptibility to certain diseases like cancer are directly associated among genetically related people. The behaviour comes from nurture which in my view is learned from our surroundings like the people with whom we live, meet and work. Both of the concepts in my view are important for an individual's up bringing as one cannot survive without nature or nurture.

Discussion
