Introduction

There are two paintings taken from the era of 18th Century and both are portraying the climatic condition of a storm. A difference need to be found out by analyzing both the pictures between the neo-classical and romantic art. According to Witcombe, (2009) Neo-classical is a school of thought that interprets a picture with a classical or an old thought, and on the other hand a picture is termed as romantic under the romanticism school of thought when it praises either nature or the thoughts of the artist.

Discussion

During the period of 18th Century Romanticism or the romantic period of art was its peak. The artists showed their feelings and praises for the nature around them. The visual art work under romanticism portrayed the inner aims of the artist and was influenced by the creativity of the artist. The law followed under romanticism was how the artist felt from inside. On the other hand neo-classical gave a classical or had a very old view of the pictures. Artists under the neo-classical thoughts added classical features in their visual art work to make it worthy of appreciation.

The two pictures analyzed are:

1) Watteau's The Storm- it is created by a French painter who was the nephew of Antoine Watteau. They both worked together in Lille and mainly focused their work on history and religion. The picture was created in the late 17th century. The picture shows a site of a countryside where people are doing precautionary measures to protect them from the situation of storm. In situations of problems many people take steps according to their beliefs and social values.
