The shortage of nurses occurs at various hospitals which creates a negative impact on the services related to the patient. The hospitals cannot afford to have a shortage of the nurses because the patient' care is the top priority for any healthcare institution. Some of the problems relating to the retention of nurses vary; however, frequently documented concerns include less salary, improper shifts, extended working hours and steps needed to create further opportunities to advocate the advancement of nursing staff. The other factors are financial rewards, fringe benefits, a proper salary structure, development of staff, and improvement of the work environment. However, the shortage of nursing staff and associated nurse retention can be linked to two broad categories of poor hospital work environment and job satisfaction.
The need for nursing care is the primary reason for an individual to be admitted to the hospital. Consequently, retention of nurses may have a direct impact on patient care or the lack of quality patient care delivery. The employment in this sector is expected to increase at a rapid rate as compare to the other healthcare occupations. However, the shortage of nurses might still occur after 2020. The life span continues to increase for most people in Canada and therefore, the nursing requirements continue to rise in order to maintain a healthy quality of life for people. The recent decrease in employment is also improving projections on the future supply of registered nurses. Nevertheless, a shortage is expected to continue; thus, the retention of nurses remains critical. Thus, there is a need to maintain current trends on staff development through continue research as recommended by various healthcare institutions.
