Introduction

Transplant surgery is one of the great advances of medical science, and has saved the lives of thousands. Yet, the organ donation on which it depends remains a difficult and sensitive issue morally, religiously and ethically. There are people who benefited from transplant surgery, on the contrary there are people who endured the agonizing wait for a life saving organ that did not become available in time. According to the National Kidney Foundation over 95,000 U.S patients are currently waiting for an organ transplant; nearly 4.000 new patients are added to the waiting list each month. Organ donation is the removal of the tissues of the human body from a person who has died or from a living donor. People of all ages may be organ and tissue donors. The person which is receiving an organ is protected by various health and safety tests. Organs and tissues which can be donated are, the heart, intestines, kidneys, lungs, liver and pancreas. Tissues which can be donated as well are, bones, corneas, heart valves, femoral veins and skin grafts. And also organs that can be donated from living donors include part of the liver or pancreas and kidney.

Organ donation is the removal of the tissues of the human body from a person who has recently died, or from a living donor, for the purpose of transplanting or grafting them into other persons. Organs and tissues are removed in procedures similar to surgery, and all incisions are closed at the conclusion of the surgery. Steps are taken to provide a traditional funeral viewing so that people will not know the deceased was a donor. People of all ages may be organ and tissue donors.
