Pablo Escobar

A well known Colombian drug leader known as Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria was born in Dec 1st, 1949 and died on Dec 2nd, 1993. He was referred as 'world's Greatest Outlaw' where he cleverly avoided being captured became the cocaine peddler. He was the most successful and the richest in global history. He is also regarded as the second richest criminal after Amado Carrillo Fuentes. He was termed as the seventh richest man world over, in 1989, by Forbes Magazine with US$25 billion. He tried to enter the politics by paying US$10 billion as national debt in 1986. He had a personal ownership of various luxurious land and vehicles. It is a common rumor that once he wanted to stay warm and for that purpose he burned US$2 million (Marquez, 1).

Early life

He was born in December 1st, 1949 in the village of Rionegro situated in Antioquia, Colombia. His father, Abel de Jesus Escobar, was a peasant and his mother, Hemilda Gaviria, was a primary school teacher. His number was 4th among six children in the family. He used to live with his family in a hut deprived of electricity but provided with running water. They can be placed in the middle class at that time in Colombia. It is known that once he along with his brother were sent home for the reason that they had no shoes to wear and also they had no money to buy the shoes either.

He was studying political science in a university when he was dropped out because of nonpayment of fees. This dropping out was the beginning id his criminal career where he started as selling stolen gravestones to smugglers. However, his brother, Roberto Escobar, argues that the gravestones came from cemetery owners suffering from nonpayment from clients and that they had a relative running a monument business. He also studied from Antioquia University for a short period (Grajales, 1).

After a while, he started doing anything to make money which included petty street scam running and also selling cigarettes and fake lottery tickets. He became a successful car thief when he was aged 20. His next business side was thief, bodyguard and kidnapping in 1970s. He made $100,000 out of this work. He became a millionaire by working with multi-millionaire contraband smugglers. By the age of 22, he was a millionaire.

Family

His family consisted of Valverde, whom he married when she was fifteen in 1976, and their two children, Juan Pablo and Manuela. After Escobar's death left the country, but were returned as they stepped Spain, running with the same fate in Germany. To remove the stigma of having the last name of Escobar, Victoria was renamed Maria Isabel Santos Caballero whereas Juan Pablo was named as Juan Sebastián Marroquín and called Juana Manuela (Escobar, 1).
