Parents and Child Adapting to the Family

Introduction

In this paper, we will analyze three different articles related to the adopted children. We will critically analyze the purpose of these studies, methods used, relevant measurements, conclusions, and finally our own remarks regarding the article's conclusion.

Discussion

Parents' Feelings towards Their Adoptive and Non-Adoptive Children

Hypothesis/Purpose of study

The primary purpose of the study was to investigate the differences in the parent gender in the links among parental negative behavior and positive behavior, and kid behavioral and expressive issues. The authors have tested whether the relationship between the feelings of the parents and the behavior of the child varied for fathers and mothers, as well as, for adoptive and non-adoptive kids inside the similar family units.

Method and relevant measures

In this study, Northeast-Northwest Collaborative Adoption Project was included as a sample for adoptive families. It had families that had one non-adoptive and adoptive child. The sample size had both mother and father (it did not have single parent) and were European American (Glover et al, 2010). The children who were adopted belonged to other countries not USA and were adopted in their first years of life. Parents had good educational level and were in their middles ages. They were given questionnaires to provide their proper feedback related to adoptive children. These families were contacted through letters which was sent by private adoption agencies. Parents then provided their response through a postcard and returned it to the project office. The questionnaire was given them that required information based on their demographic characteristics. It was related to their educational information, marital status, income and household information, birth related information and the adoption date (Glover et al, 2010). Parents who returned the questionnaire were then selected for the study. They were then required to complete the survey materials with the help of email.

In the measurement procedure, parents provided their feelings for the two children in a separate manner by using Parent Feelings Questionnaire or PFQ. It had 31 items in the questionnaire that analyzed the parent's thoughts, feelings and perceptions regarding the relationship with the child. It included both negative and positive feelings regarding the specific child. The measurements of these responses were based on likert scale. Likert scale is a useful instrument used in various kinds of research studies. In another part, both parents completed a Child Behavior Checklist for every child (Glover et al, 2010). It is also a useful instrument to measure the responses generated by the required persons. This scale had different ranges and criteria for the measurement of the data. Both the scales had the same objective to measure the response and feedback provided by parents regarding their adoptive children. Therefore, these were the overall research methods for the study.
