Pastoral Counseling

Introduction

The counselor must perceive the world from the perspective of his patient. In this case, the counselor must not only perceive the patient's words, but also to feel his emotions. Possible reaction of the counselor: to bow to his patient's shoulder and pat him. Such therapeutic reaction poses a risk: the counselor can be "dropped" the patient. However, if the patient is crying, take your pain and sorrow, and then this will mean extending the self-concept patient.

Patient experience associated with the experience that the counselor understands it gives the patient the power to expand their self-concept. Thus, empathic understanding means more than just tuning of the counselor in the world of the patient but also encourages the patient to further "investigation" of his inner world. Empathetic therapeutic response is quite specific in the technical sense.

Empathically respond is to give the patient a clear understanding that the counselor understands it. This understanding can be expressed in a direct statement of the state of the patient or metaphorical, but should be avoided trite maxims like:" I understand you quite well."

However, even if not very accurate empathic reactions, the counselor the patient can experience a wonderful sense of co-presence. Important not so much the accuracy of understanding of the patient itself but imagine how much interest to the world of the patient by the counselor. Empathy is a process in which the counselor is getting closer and closer to the thoughts and feelings to the patient. Accurate empathy is an ideal case.

According to the American Association of Pastoral Consultants (AAPC) pastoral counseling is a form of psychotherapy which uses spiritual resources, as well as psychological understanding for healing and growth. A basic theme in pastoral counseling is awareness of the spiritual dimension in human wholeness. Crises and transitions are discussed in terms such as faith, meaning, purpose and direction as well as in psychotherapeutic terms. Pastoral counseling Foundation dates back to 1930 when the minister Norman Vincent Peale and psychiatrist Smiley Blanton, MD, integrated religion and psychotherapy for psychotherapeutic purposes. Other scholars of social influence, as Carl Jung, Abraham Maslow, William James and Karl Menninger, also shared this awareness of spirituality and psychotherapy. For many years, pastoral counseling, psychotherapy evolved from religious or spiritual guidance, pastoral, a practice that integrates theology and behavioral sciences. AAPC was founded in 1963 (Moore, 1983).
