There are numerous different disabilities that sway a number of children each year. Some situation weaken the body and some weaken the brain. Down syndrome sways each one-by-one in distinct ways. Some young kids struggle with the condition while other ones blossom and make great strides all through their lives. All young kids with Down syndrome have the promise to contribute to society as much as any person else.

Down syndrome is a condition associated with the mental retardation that outcomes from a chromosomal abnormality. There are three types of chromosome abnormalities affiliated with Down syndrome. The first is trisomy 21. This is the result of an additional 21 chromosome. Instead of the usual 46 chromosomes, the one-by-one with Down syndrome has 47 chromosomes in each cell (Selikowitz). Trisomy 21 is the origin of the majority of cases of Down syndrome (Pueschel, 1992).

The second kind of abnormality is called translocation. This occurs when the additional 21 chromosome attaches itself to another chromosome. The chromosomes affected in this case are generally 14, 21, or 22 (Pueschel, 1992). Translocation happens when one of the parents is a carrier of translocation. This kind of chromosome error is found in about 4 per hundred of persons with Down syndrome (Selikowitz).
