Personal Development as a First Line Manager

Introduction

Any enterprise, whether it to be an industrial giant or a family hair salon, it has to be managed effectively. When we say "business management", we mean the action of its head to achieve a certain goal. The management of an organization is not easy and involves decision making. Effective management is necessary for the fulfilment of organizational goals and objectives to be met (Kotter, 2002, 78). The word "manager" means "skillful rider," and "management is the art of riding." In the modern sense of the word "manager" and "management" appeared only when the business owners, the hosts realized that very beneficial not to take control of their own property, and to do it professionals, specially selected for the job (Albert, 2008, 184). 

The word manager refers to the person responsible for the management of a particular company or organization, or a section of it (Kleiman, 2010, 96). There are various types of managers. However in this paper I am going to talk about my personal development as First line manager since personal development is also important along with professional development. Before going into the detail of the plan, I will be evaluating what First line manager is and then various concepts and activities shall be conducted.

First line Manager

The people responsible for the work of others, who occupy the lowest level of an organization, are called first-line managers or first level. Often, first-line managers are called "supervisors" (Manfred, 2003, 55). Frontline managers do not have the authority to supervise other managers. Examples of first-line managers could mention the production manager of a business or an office supervisor (Craig, 2009, 29).

Purpose of Personal Development Plan

Personal development plan is an effective activity to enhance personality of person. The main objective of my personal development plan is to enhance my communication and leadership skills to meet challenging situations in the workplace environment.

Organizational Objective

The objective of the Fire Rescue Department is to ensure that it has skilled people and resources to ensure the safety of citizens in case of a catastrophe. In order to achieve these objectives the department needs managers who can effectively communicate and lead their peers in pressurized situations.

Learning and developing new skills and abilities are among my top priorities. I always try to develop new skills that help me in achieving my personal as well as organizational goals.

I am working as a first line manager in a reputable Fire Rescue Orgnization, and my goal is to become senior manager in coming 3 years. Research show that there should always be a linkage between personal and organizational goal (Gomez, 2008, 20), It is important to find link between organizational objectives and personal development objective.
