Role of Brain in Cognitive Functions

Social psychologists have spent around fifty years in striving to clarify the strategies that individuals employ while encountering with other people. However, from early 1990s, interdisciplinary areas of social cognitive, neuroscience discovered main, social psychological topics. It combined evidence from classic social-psychological studies with data gathered from neuro imaging; event-related brain potentials, and lesion studies. Social cognitive neuroscience has made an attempt to explore the social mind from multilevel viewpoints. While few of the leading methods such as neuro imaging became popular in last ten years, but the discovery of the intimate relationship between the human brain and the human mind has a long scientific history (Haxby, 2000) (Cacioppo, 1992).

In order to acquire a proper understanding of the process and products of person perception, integrative theorizing and experimentation required. In this respect, neuroscience research provides valuable information about the neuro anatomy and temporal characteristics of person perception that challenges previous models of person understanding. For example, an influential early cognitive model of face perception and recognition proposed that the structural encoding of a person's appearance precedes the access to further person-related knowledge. Recent neuro scientific investigations into person perception provide accumulating evidence, that many aspects of person construal seem to be organized, in a parallel rather than a sequential fashion. Following brain damage, for instance, patients with a deficiency in recognizing faces and yet a spared ability to read facial expressions of emotion reported, indicating that the detection, analysis of facial affect and the structural encoding of facial features, sub served by partly unique neural networks. Nevertheless, one of the major challenges for future behavioral and neuro scientific research is to understand how the human mind forms a unified impression of others based on the diversity of person cues available and neural systems involved. The question that poses itself is how the products of different processing streams become integrated. Although distinguishing between person categorization and other kinds of person perception may be useful to theorize about person construal, it needs to be acknowledged that when encountering others in everyday life a wide variety of person cues, extracted simultaneously, and, collectively influence the person perception process (Cacioppo, 1992) (Cacioppo, 1992).
