Desert is certain thing that is deserved. A “three-place relation”, desert has three elements: the subject (the individual who pledged an act), an object (reward, applaud, compensation) and a cornerstone (effort, assistance, lesson virtue) (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy).

For Pojman, dessert, being a subcategory of merit, pertains to voluntary action. Desert then constitutes the desirability of a person's conclusions and activities and is inherent in lesson responsibility. It is just but equitable that larger effort, more assistance or more virtuous dwelling warrant larger reward. It is just but equitable that an individual who pledged robbery with killing will be more harshly penalized than somebody who pledged straightforward theft. Merit is a broader notion, the genus of which desert is the species. Throughout annals, we could glimpse how humankind, in every communal or heritage realm, had invoked fairness founded on desert and merit. (Pojman, “Justice and dessert” 99-100).

Rewarding those who manage well to us and penalizing those who incorrect us are spontaneous responses and thus contemplate human nature.
