Introduction

The professionalism shows in behavior and actions of a person in connection with his work and is characterized by intelligence, integrity, maturity of mind and attention to others. Police officers, whose work is described as a profession and the public who receive their services, expect that the concept of professionalism dictates the performance and conduct of a police officer. However, due to the recent emergence of issues surrounding the decline of professionalism, a renewal in this area has emerged among members of the police community. 

This move comes in response to a growing lack of respect among police officers, facing the opposing party and sometimes even face to public. There is a perception that police officers would work far from their roots, whereas the right more like a job rather than a vocation. In light of changes in behavior, it is imperative to inform police officers and the general public, the ins and outs of professional and lay the foundations on which to build standards and values ??for services and of professional behavior. (Williams, 2003)

The foundation of professionalism

The development of a broad definition of professionalism to which all police officers can look behind is comprises of various of various components and have several dimensions, the heart of this definition includes scholarship, integrity, honor, leadership, independence, pride, enthusiasm, collegiality, service to the public without discrimination, a police officer have to fulfill various obligations and have to perform above the usual standards of professionalism.

Sophistication

To advance in their profession, police officers must meet criteria for advanced studies in criminology allowing them to offer competent services during their careers. Acquired by experience, enhanced by the interaction with mentors, improved following the lead of colleagues and supported y continuing education, professional expertise equips the right police officer of essential tools to adequately address the different situations.

Integrity

Every police officer should recognize the Code of Ethics as the cornerstone of professionalism. In addition to the obligation to comply with the rules established by the police department, it is expected the police officer to exercise self-discipline and that it adheres to high standards of behavior that transcends the Code of Ethics. The police officer accepts responsibility for his own actions, but also accepts collective responsibility to ensure, within the limits of possibility, that the profession meets the rightful role.

As members of a governing body that grants them rights to practice as a privilege, police officers are subject to self-regulation. Some officials consider this aspect of professionalism as a contract with the company under which it has delegated powers of self-regulation to the public service profession should in return, not exercise those powers in the public interest. Taken from this perspective, police officers are individually and collectively the moral and ethical obligation to answer them is given. (Kleinig, 2003)
