Stand-Up-Pouch with Spout for Milk

Description of innovative idea

Initially customers lapped-up the milk bags, buying twice as many as of other brands originally predicted. At that time shoppers bought 120,000 semi-skimmed milk bags per week - which is one in every ten 2 pint semi-skimmed units sold. Compared to an equivalent two pint plastic bottle, milk in a bag costs at least six pence less because it uses 75% less packaging and is cheaper to produce, while switching to bags could save up to 1,400,000 kg of packaging every year.

Effect of artificial weathering on mechanical properties of different formulated composites was determined. The recycled polymer-based jute fibre composites showed inferior mechanical properties as well as poor thermal stability compared to those observed for virgin polymer/jute fibre composites. However, the jute-composites made with (50:50) recycled milk pouch-virgin LDPE-LLDPE blend as polymer matrix indicated significantly superior properties in comparison to the recycled milk pouch/jute composites. Overall mechanical performances of the recycled and virgin polymeric composites were correlated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The dynamic mechanical analysis showed that storage modulus values were lower for recycled LDPE-LLDPE/jute composites compared to virgin LDPE-LLDPE/jute composites throughout the entire temperature range, but an increase in the storage modulus was observed for recycled-virgin LDPE-LLDPE/jute composites (James, 2009, 1301).

Especially recommended for milk products, sauces, soups, and purees, food pre-cooked in sauce, rice and pasta in all types of flexible packaging where smooth movement is sufficient to obtain the quality objectives without subjecting the packaging or ingredients to the risk of damage by excessive movement. Comparative studies in various products have resulted in reductions of up to 40% in the cycle time compared to static treatment. It is especially recommended for milk products, sauces, soups, and purees, food pre-cooked in sauce, rice and pasta in all types of rigid and flexible packaging. The rotary retort can also function in oscillating mode, making it especially recommended for certain types of flexible packaging.

Scope of proposal

Milk sold in bags is a regular choice for 60% of consumers in Canada, Poland, South Africa and China and to a certain extent in the UK.

However in 2010 Waitrose ditched its environmentally friendly milk pouch and jug concept, claiming poor demand was leading to high wastage. The supermarket phased out both the Calon Wen branded milk and its own-label milk pouches.

A huge quantity of polyethylene (PE), particularly low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) are consumed for this purpose. It has been reported that around 33,000 metric tons (MT) of PE was consumed in UK in the year 1995 and the figure increased to 40,000 MT in 1997.

In practice, such packaging trend leads to enhance the volume of PE packaging waste in the municipal and domestic garbage after their short service life, which could cause serious problem in our social life. Moreover, the huge consumption of PE in the milk-packaging sector also reduces the petroleum reserve. Therefore, the effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle ...
