Medical physics to support practical radiotherapy

Medical physics

The term refers to the utilization of physics in the field of medical science. Although applicable in many different areas of the medical field, it is more commonly used in “radiotherapy” and medical imaging. A medical physical, department is usually in a university, or has a base in a hospital, and conducts research, and is responsible for healthcare clinical development. The application and speciality is the field of medical physic vary tremendously in breath and scope with approximately eighty five percent of workers in the field practicing or specializing in a number of different fields, while ten percent specialize in “diagnostic imaging”, and less than five percent in “nuclear medicines” (Thwaites, Pp. 57).

Radiotherapy

Radiotherapy is a process of treating cancer by trying to control malignant cell by using ionizing radiation and has an abbreviation of XRT. The radiotherapy treatment is used on cancer tumour as can control and restrict cell growth. It has the ability of harm the cancer cells by destroying DNA, because cancerous cells are is more vulnerable as they have switched off their ability to repair the DNA while becoming cancerous. The radiation beam is fired from a variety of angels to meet at the tumour, resulting in much higher effect on the tumour in comparison to the surrounding healthy tissues. This is done to spare the normal and healthy tissues and organs, through which the radiation must pass to reach the tumour (Nahum, A. Pp. 33).
